MULTIDISCIPLINARY VISITING FELLOWSHIP PROGRAMME

ESOR is proud to have launched an innovative initiative aimed at strengthening multidisciplinary collaboration.
This fellowship programme offers one a duo of one radiologist and one surgeon, who already work together in a multidisciplinary team in their home institution, the opportunity to get to know in tandem the environment of another training center abroad.
During this two-week visit, the visiting team will be provided with a structured, modular introduction to specific topics in one of the pre-selected, highly esteemed academic training centres in Europe as listed below.

Please note:
In 2024, one duo will be accepted at each available hosting institution (see below).
- Only tandem applications will be accepted.
- Young board-certified radiologists and surgeons of up to 40 years of age (at the time of the application) who already work together in a multidisciplinary team at their home institution situated in Europe or outside are eligible to apply for this programme.
- Previous exposure to the expert field is required (subspecialisation).
- Applicants must be fluent in English.
- An active ESR membership for the radiologist is requested. (To renew your ESR Membership or to become an ESR Member, please proceed to the ESR website.)
- As the very baseline of this programme is to gain experience abroad in another institution, applicants will only be able to apply to institutions outside of their country of residence (no exceptions will be made).
- The selected candidates will be asked to provide additional documents to the training centre for administrative purposes.
- A valid Covid-19 vaccination certificate will be required by most hospitals.
- The selected visiting fellows are further asked to take care of their health insurance and are responsible for their visa for which they should apply well in time because of longer waiting periods.
- All applications will be carefully reviewed by an expert evaluation committee after the submission deadline.

A Joint Letter of Motivation
issued in tandem by the applying radiologist and the applying surgeon shall be provided which explains the gain for the applying departments/ fellows.
The letter should also indicate which of the two hosting institutions applicants are interested in visiting. See more below.

from the heads both departments (radiology and surgery), explaining why and how this tandem visiting fellowship will benefit their department and institution.

Hosting institutions
HOSTING INSTITUTION I: THE NETHERLANDS CANCER INSTITUTE
Department of Radiology and Department of Colorectal Surgery
Amsterdam/NL
The Netherlands Cancer Institute in Amsterdam is a Comprehensive Cancer Center with a focus on innovation in research and treatment of cancer patients. The department of radiology, chaired by Prof Dr Regina Beets-Tan provides highly subspecialised diagnostic and interventional oncology service in almost all tumour types. The Colorectal Cancer (CRC) clinical practice is multidisciplinary. In this tertiary referral cancer center, diagnosis and treatment are at highly specialised level and the multidisciplinary team members of radiology, surgery, radiotherapy, medical oncology, gastroenterology, pathology and other clinical specialties collaborate intensively to deliver the best treatment for the CRC patient. Many CRC clinical trials are running investigating innovative treatment options. Multidisciplinary research projects are taking place both in imaging and in treatment. In particular the research in rectal cancer MRI and organ preservation for rectal cancer are internationally recognised. Another important focus of research in the field of CRC is Artificial Intelligence. The combination of an inspiring comprehensive cancer research institute and highly subspecialised cancer practice will make that this two-week multidisciplinary fellowship will be a unique experience for you and your buddy to gain knowledge in imaging, surgery and multidisciplinary management of patients with CRC.
HOSTING INSTITUTION II: HOSPITAL BEAUJON
Department of Radiology and Department of Hepatobiliary and Pancreatic Surgery
Clichy/France
The department of radiology at the University Beaujon Hospital (Université Paris Cité) in France (suburbs of Paris) (head: Prof. Dr. Valérie Vilgrain) performs comprehensive abdominal and digestive imaging and scientific research using state-of-the-art imaging equipment including CT scanners with multispectral technology, 3T MRI. Clinical imaging comprises the whole spectrum of diagnostic and interventional abdominal and digestive imaging including: MRI, CT, ultrasonography (using contrast-enhanced techniques and shear-wave elastography), endovascular and percutaneous interventional procedures. Strong collaboration between the clinical departments (hepatology, pancreatology, gastroenterology, hepatobiliary surgery, and digestive surgery), the department of pathology and the department of radiology allows optimal patient management and fruitful research. A research lab on imaging biomarkers in abdominal diseases (head: Prof. Dr. Bernard Van Beers) favours translational research. The combination of an inspiring academic institute and highly subspecialised hepatobiliary and pancreatic practice will make that this two-week multidisciplinary fellowship will be a unique experience for you and your buddy to gain knowledge in imaging and multidisciplinary management of patients with hepatobiliary and/or pancreatic disease.

Duration of Fellowship and Funding
The two-week visits will take place in the period between September and December 2024 and must be completed by the end of 2024. The final dates of the tandem visits will be fixed by the hosting institutions together with the selected applicants.
The visiting fellows will receive each a grant of €1,000 upon the completion of the visit, delivery of a final report as a team as well as a separate final report from the department chairs of the hosting institution and the submission of original flight tickets and accommodation receipts. The grant is intended to contribute in part to travel and accommodation expenses during the visiting period. ESOR cannot guarantee that the grant will cover these costs in full. During the period of the training the fellows are responsible for covering his/her expenses and his/her own health insurance. The training itself is offered for free. Please note that in particular cases administrative charges may arise, which are to be covered by the grant.

The abdominal radiologist will visit the department of surgery at the host institution to learn and observe:
– surgical indications
– patient management and how to communicate with cancer patients
– post operative complications
– surgical procedures
The digestive /hepatobiliary surgeon will visit the department of radiology at the host institution to learn and observe:
– how to use imaging for accurate clinical decision making
– imaging techniques
– imaging of post-operative complications
IMPORTANT:
Both specialists will meet weekly at multidisciplinary team sessions.
Both specialists are expected to attend in tandem teaching sessions held at both departments for residents and fellows and should teach in tandem to residents and fellows during one of the teaching sessions at the host institution.
Mentors will be assigned to both specialists for the entire duration of the visit.
