Clinical Fellowship in Breast Imaging

Hadassah Hebrew University Medical Center, Jerusalem/Israel

The breast imaging unit at Hadassah Hebrew University Hospital is a modern multidisciplinary diagnostic breast facility with dedicated centres located at the two Hadassah Hospital campuses in Jerusalem. We specialise in both screening and diagnostic breast examinations following personally tailored patient-specific protocols based on the clinical presentation and risk status of each individual. In addition to our own screening population, we serve as a major referral centre for diagnostic work-up for a number of communitiy-based screening centres in the Jerusalem area. The breast imaging centres are equipped with state-of-the-art equipment to enable the best possible patient care. Being fully digital, we currently have three digital mammograms, two with tomosynthesis, and one with contrast enhanced digital mammography capability. We work with three dedicated breast ultrasound machines, including shear-wave elastography. The full spectrum of breat biopsies are performed by our highly trained staff, including US guided FNA and core needle biopsies of breast and axillary lesions, mammographically-guided vacuum assisted stereotactic biopsies on a dedicated prone table and MRI-guided biopsies of lesions seen only on MRI. Breast MRI is performed at both facilities on a 3 Tesla machine with a dedicated breast coil. Annually we perform over 5000 mammograms, 4500 US examinations, 500 US guided procedures, 100 stereotactic biopsies, 200 needle localisations for surgery, approximately 1000 breast MRI examinations and about 100 MR-guided biopsies. The centre is directed by Dr. Tamar Sella, a breast radiologist with over 10 years of experience in breast imaging, who began her career in the field following fellowship training at Memorial Sloan Kettering Cancer Center in New York. Our dedicated staff works in close collaboration with breast surgeons, oncologists, plastic surgeons and pathologists; a weekly multidisciplinary conference is conducted to discuss challenging cases.

Programme structure

Performing an Abdominal Imaging fellowship at Hadassah will expose the trainee to all the above mentioned modalities and will teach them how to properly combine them for optimal patient care. Daily work will include supervised interpretation of CT  and MRI studies, performing ultrasound and taking part in active treatment of our patients. The fellow will participate in interventional procedures under all the modalities mentioned above and will participate in multidisciplinary consultations and conferences.

We build a personalised programme for the trainee with emphasis on what will help him/her most to improve care at his/her home facility.

Research oppotunities will be explored with the trainee as well, with the goal of at least one published paper by the end of the fellowship.

A detailed individual programme is determined at the beginning of the fellowship in consultation with the fellow.

After successful completion of the one-year training the trainee receives a certificate from ESR/ESOR and Hadassah Hebrew University Medical Center. In order to receive this, the fellow must present a written report about his/her work and activities during the programme.
