CLINICAL FELLOWSHIP IN
CARDIAC IMAGING
learn from the best
The Joint Department of Medical Imaging (JDMI) oversees the imaging services for three of Canada’s leading research and teaching hospitals/hospital organizations across five locations, including Toronto General Hospital, Toronto Western Hospital, Mount Sinai Hospital, Princess Margaret Hospital, and Women’s College Hospital. The Cardiovascular & Thoracic Division includes more than 20 staff radiologists.
The Division is responsible for all Cardiac CT and Cardiovascular MR Imaging at the hospitals listed above. This includes all services for the Peter Munk Cardiac Centre (PMCC), which ranks among Canada’s leading non-invasive cardiovascular imaging programs. Currently, the department performs nearly 4,000 adult cardiovascular MR exams annually, encompassing a significant Cardiomyopathy/Heart Failure program, one of the most extensive adult congenital heart disease programs, and a large Aortopathies program.
The cardiac CT program includes a range of services including a structural heart disease program (which covers TAVR, Mitral valve interventions, and LAA occlusion devices), a large population with coronary artery disease (CAD), and an adult congenital heart disease program.
The Thoracic Imaging section performs >50,000 CTs and >750 CT-guided lung biopsies each year and serves a large oncology program, Canada’s premier lung transplant program, an extensive interstitial lung disease program, among other patient populations. This extensive case volume offers robust exposure to a broad spectrum of thoracic diseases and advanced procedural techniques.
JDMI is part of the Department of Medical Imaging of the University of Toronto, the academic home of this Fellowship Program.

The successful candidate must obtain a Canadian work permit to be eligible for OHIP health insurance. Depending on the candidate’s citizenship, an additional visa may be required, for which the fellow is also responsible. The University of Toronto Postgraduate Medical Education office and the training centre will provide support for respective applications. The Fellow is responsible for finding accommodation, which is neither provided by JDMI nor by the University of Toronto.
Please note:
One position for the 2027-2028 Clinical Year is available. One position for the 2028-2029 Clinical Year is available.
It is possible to apply for only one ESOR training programme at the same time.
- The exchange programme applies to late radiology trainees or recently board-certified radiologists (within the first three years after boad certification) residing in Europe.
- Applicants must be proficient in both written and spoken English.
- Applicants must have completed an accredited Radiology training programme.
- Applicants must be certified by the Royal College of Physicians and Surgeons of Canada in Diagnostic Imaging or American Board of Radiology certified/eligible, or certified with equivalent qualifications. Board certification / national equivalent certification may be sufficient.
- Shortlisted candidates will be invited for an online interview.
- An active ESR membership is required.
Duration of Fellowship and Funding
This is a 12-month clinical Fellowship primarily focused on Cardiac Imaging. The Fellowship will start on July 1, 2027, as the academic year runs from July 1st to June 30th. The Fellow’s annual salary is in the range of CAD $85,000-87,000 (gross); appropriate taxes are deducted accordingly. The grant will be paid directly to the Fellow by the training centre.
programme structure
GENERAL OBJECTIVES
The successful candidate will work clinically under a College of Physicians and Surgeons of Ontario (CPSO) Postgraduate Educational License. Under this license, the candidate will participate in regular clinical duties and after-hours on-call shifts.
This subspecialty training aims to deepen and strengthen the fellows’ knowledge of a wide range of cardiovascular and thoracic conditions. After completing this fellowship, the fellow will be qualified to practice independently in the field of cardiac and thoracic imaging.
The scope of work includes protocol development, supervision, and monitoring of imaging studies, as well as image interpretation and reporting.
SPECIFIC OBJECTIVES
- To understand cardiac/cardiovascular anatomy and hemodynamics
- To understand, develop, and optimize respective imaging protocols for efficient and accurate examination and diagnosis.
- To understand the benefits, indications, and risks of the various imaging modalities and to select the best test with respect to the underlying clinical question.
- To use modern post-processing technologies in an efficient way to optimize workflow and diagnostic capabilities.
- To prepare, present, and discuss cases in multidisciplinary rounds for treatment decisions.
- To independently protocol, supervise, and interpret cardiac imaging studies, including (but not limited to) cardiac CT, cardiac MR, and aortic MR angiography, as well as Chest CT covering a wide range of indications and underlying diseases.
- To serve as an independent Cardiac/Cardiothoracic Radiologist for referring physicians, providing consultation on specific patient diagnosis and management needs.
STRUCTURE
This is a 12-month Fellowship; no split or divided fellowships are offered. Fellows’ schedules will be created by the Divisional Fellowship Director and the scheduling coordinator under the supervision of the Division Head
9 months of the Fellowship will be dedicated to cardiac imaging, and 3 months to thoracic imaging.
Fellows will be exposed to a high volume of Cardiac CTs, Cardiovascular MRI, Vascular CT and MRI, Chest CT, and Chest X-ray. Fellows will also gain experience in image-guided interventions, such as lung and mediastinal biopsies, chest tube insertions, and CT-guided microcoil localization, and will participate in on-call coverage for the chest. For the required single research project, 20% of academic time will be allocated.
